Document Summary

Children appear to know much more about language than they could possibly learn from the input. Negative evidence: evidence about which items are absent in the infinite set. It is helpful to eliminate potential infinite sets from considerations, narrowing down the space of possibilities. You can test hypotheses until you find the right one. We believe that we need a system in between these two extreme positions. If some knowledge is innate, it will be domain general. Limited- children hear much less than they can soon produce. Lacking explicit instructions- children are not directly taught the rules of grammar. Modern nativism and modern empiricism still argue about how much biology and how much experience should be present to account for the logical problem of language acquisition. Nativists allow for multiple types of innate knowledge. Could be domain specific for each cognitive ability: the continuum of voice onset time, continuum of place of articulation, continuum of vowel space.
