Retrieval: getting information out of memory into awareness. Encoding: input of information into memory system. Occurs through automatic processing and effortful processing. Nomethologic network: things we already have in our head. Encoding of details like time, space, frequency and meaning of words. Ex. what you ate for lunch that day. Context dependant: location of where you are sitting impacts memory adds information. Requires work and attention to encode information. Works better when we have things in our head. Top-down processing: way we process information is based on what we already know and experience. Ex. learning how to drive, start car, brake, turn. Material better encoded when it is meaningful. Words encoded semantically better remembered that encoded visually or acoustically. Self-reference effect: tendency for individual to have better memory for information that relates to oneself.
