Document Summary

Some of the most persuasive evidence that the limbic system is associated with subjectively experienced affect comes from observations in human beings of the effects of electrical brain stimulation (ebs). Charles whitman illustrates violent aggression conducted compulsively without feelings of anger or rage, or indeed feelings of any kind. The behavior of persons stimulated in limbic systems structures such as the amygdala can be quite different. Here there is evidence of subjective affect without behavioral compulsion. Although the feelings are uncontrolled, they are not acted upon. Individuals seem to maintain considerable control of their goal-directed behavior. Mkultra is the code name for a cia mind-control research program begun in the 1950s and ended in 1973. Experiments on humans were intended to identify and develop procedures to be used to exert mind control. Esb was used with schizophrenic and epileptic participants, outwardly to develop treatments for those conditions.
