PUBH 1001 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Epidemiological Transition, Gross Domestic Product
Document Summary
Non communicable diseases represent the majority of causes of death/disability. Epidemiological transition: phase of development witnessed by a sudden and in m ost countries. stark increase in population growth rates brought by medical innovation in disease or sickness therapy and treatment. Strategies used as a part of the population health approach. Asymptomatic: individuals who do not have symptoms of a specific disease. 4 criteria have to be fulfilled for an ideal screening program: The disease produces substantial death/and or disability. Early detection is possible and improves outcome. There is a feasible testing strategy for screening. Screening is acceptable in terms of harms, costs, and patient acceptance. Screening may result in early detection, but if effective treatment is not available, it may only just merely alert the clinician. Lead-time bias: early detection without improved outcome. False positives: individuals who have positive results on a screening test, but do not turn out to have the disease.
