AS AM 1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Refugee Act, Model Minority
Document Summary
Militarized refugees the byproduct of refuge from us militarism. Appropriated that war, no matter the cost, was ultimately necessary, just, & successful. Refugees aren"t damaged victims or model minorities. Their stories & actions trouble and affirm regimes of power. Calling african americans refugees after hurricane katrina was offensive. Almost like verbally stripping them of their citizenship. Refugee triggers third world poverty, foreignness, & statelessness. Seen as objects of rescue fleeing from impoverished, war-torn/corrupt states. Also makes america seem like the perfect place for refuge. Out-of place victims & nation-state as ultimate provider of human welfare. Americans located the problem within the bodies & minds of refugees rather than in the global historical conditions that produced their displacement. Remade the case for the rightness of the us war in vietnam b/c of the rescue & care for vietnam"s runaways. Refugeeness came to distinguish between the uncivilized east & the civilized west.
