AS AM 1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Ghost Soldiers, Army Of The Republic Of Vietnam, Vietnamese Americans
Document Summary
Organized forgetting of more than 200,000 arvn dead was a form of forced disappearance. Controlled production of war memories by demolishing the monuments & national cemeteries that were dedicated to them. To invoke the arvn in the us would be to recall american war failure. Forced disappearance evident in the opposition directed against vietnamese american attempts to monumentalize their status as america"s allies & collaborators. Wanted to erect a statue in the veterans memorial park depicting an american soldier with his arm around a south vietnamese comrade with a plaque expressing gratitude to american allies & friends. American veterans rejected this because they said that memorial park was reserved for america"s veterans who fought america"s wars for america"s armed forces . Compromise: monument would be placed on the land adjacent to but separated from memorial park by an earthen wall. Changed power dynamics of representation for traditionally marginalized groups.
