Hiv = human immunodeficiency virus leads to aids. 1900"s spread of hiv from chimpanzees to humans. 1968 earliest case of aids appears in the midwest. 1980"s start of the epidemic in the us. 1995 leading cause of death for 25-44 y/o was aids. Originally thought ony hemophiliacs, homosexuals, heroin users, & haitians got aids. 1987 azidothymidine (aka zidovudine) first treatment for hiv. Treatments to reduce mother to child transmission. 1997 highly active antiretroviral therapy (haart) new treatment. Led to a 47% decline in death rates. Combivir combines two drugs into a single medication easier to take. 2017 studies show that a person living with hiv who is on regular antiretroviral therapy that reduces the virus to undetectable levels is not able to transmit hiv to a partner during sex. Originally called grids (gay related immunodeficiency syndrome) Bathhouses closed due to high-risk sexual activity. Children with hiv were barred from attending schools.
