Treatments to reduce mother to child transmission. 1997 highly active antiretroviral therapy (haart) new treatment. Led to a 47% decline in death rates. Combivir combines two drugs into a single medication easier to take. 2017 studies show that a person living with hiv who is on regular antiretroviral therapy that reduces the virus to undetectable levels is not able to transmit hiv to a partner during sex. Originally called grids (gay related immunodeficiency syndrome) Bathhouses closed due to high-risk sexual activity. Children with hiv were barred from attending schools.
