PHYS 3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 21: Surface Charge, Euclidean Vector, Vector Field
Document Summary
Electric charge = a property that allows objects to attract other objects. Electrostatic = the interaction between electric charges that are at rest. Two positive charges or two negative charges repel each other. A positive charge and a negative charge attract each other. Nucleus = a dense core made out of the protons and neutrons in an atom. Strong nuclear force = the attractive interaction within a stable atomic nuclei that hold protons and neutrons together. Negative charge of an electron has the same magnitude as the positive charge of a proton. In a neutral atom, the number of electrons equals the number of protons in the nucleus. Atomic number = the number of protons or electrons in a neutral atom of an element. Positive ion = an atom that has lost one or more electrons. Negative ion = an atom that has gained one or more electrons. Ionization = the gain or loss of electrons.
