Frontier state that shared most of the material culture of the shang. Capital was in the west near modern xi"an in shaanxi province. Three zhou rulers credited for the conquest of the shang: His son, king wu: conquered the shang. Wu"s brother, the duke of zhou: consolidated the conquest and served as a regent for wu"s heir. Book of documents: speeches, pronouncements, and reports that depict the zhou conquest as the victory of just and noble warriors, supported by heaven. Bronze inscriptions: documents originally written on wood or bamboo that specified appointments to office or fiefs would be reproduced in bronze so it could be passed down. Didn"t mark an abrupt break with shang culture, but some practices declined. Divining by heating oracle bones became less common. Although interring followers in tombs continued, the number of people gradually declined. Like the shang, they sacrificed to their ancestors, but also to the divine force called the sky or heaven.
