MMW 13 – Textbook Notes – Kilwa, Mombasa, and the Portuguese & The Portuguese in Africa and India & Cutt Off Their Ears, Hands, and Noses Kilwa, Mombasa, and the Portuguese Introduction • Sacked the cities in 1505 • Written by Hans Mayr, German seamen serving the Portuguese Kilwa • King of Kilwa sent gifts instead of coming to meet them • King couldn’t come out because he had guests, but he said he would pay the tribute required • Went looking for the king at the palace and broke down the door, but it was deserted • Recounting story of the Portuguese coming to Kilwa to convert the people and prosper in its riches • Lots of plants and agriculture • The people sleep in hammocks above the ground • Perfume exports • Fortress built from the best house there, with all the other houses around it torn down • Bows, arrows, shields, and a few swords • Captain appointed a new king when it was clear that the old king fled, and they paraded him around • Slaves wear garments around their waist, and nothing on their top; free people wear something around their waist and top • Portguese coins have same value • Many mosques Mombasa • Fortress at the entrance to the harbor o Fired at the first ship that came in, so they fired back and lit the gunpowder the fortress had on fire • Went to burn the town but the Moors started attacking them o Still managed to set the city on fire • Ordered the town sacked and that all treasure be taken, with each man later receiving a share of it • Took prisoners • Paraded around the riches that they took • 1,500 people killed o 5 Portuguese killed and many wounded • Took the guns that the city had o Discovered an anchor and cannon stolen from othe
