Hippocrates = father of medicine: same generation as socrates. Plato says that he was from a family on cos island (= kos, southwestern coast of turkey: housed a shrine to god of medicine asclepius. Family claimed to descend from this god. His (supposed) tomb in thessaly is thought to be responsible for medical miracles: anti-christian writer celsus says that honey from bees residing in tomb can heal mouth disorders. The hippocratic collection (works attributed to hippocrates) were made by later people. Attributed to him after his death: compiled in egyptian city of alexandria ~200 ad. Hippocrates believes that epilepsy should not be attributed to divine means: epilepsy bears little resemblance to known diseases out of ignorance, people attribute a divine nature to it. Argues that if something surprising/ unknown = sacred, then there would not just be o(cid:374)e si(cid:374)gle (cid:862)sa(cid:272)red(cid:863) thi(cid:374)g.
