Empire under augustus == roman peace (pax romana) Rome saw great expansion and flourishment in art, trade, and production. Some of the rulers following augustus were great, others not so much. Fla(cid:448)ian dynasty restored peace after nero"s inept rule and carried on augustus" (cid:449)ork. After flavians were the antonine dynasty, whose rule enabled rome to reach height of pax. Military becomes much more defensive, and consists more of noncitizens: serving in military would earn you roman citizenship. Rome was probably the largest city in the time. Most residents were poor, others were slaves. Roman engineers create aqueducts for water and a complex sewage system. Rome sometimes experiences food shortages government fed people with free food. Rome entertained the people with gladiator fights and chariot races. As rome expanded, so too did the provinces through trade and growth of industry. Rome was a melting pot of cultures. Roman expansion allows it to become a strong economic force too.
