Mmw 12 textbook notes chapter 9: the islamic world. 755 umayyad prince set up caliphate in cordoba. 820 khurasan: was a governor, but then stopped paying taxes and mentioning caliph. 946 shi"ia iranian clan overran iraq, occupied baghdad: overthrown and ruler blinded. Puppet rulers until mongols killed last caliph in 1258. Good slave soldiers since they were excellent on horseback. Converted to islam so that they would not be slaves. Invaded baghdad and killed the last abbasid caliph 1258. Later generations converted and began to spread the faith. Converts were treated as second-class: led some to adopt shi"ism. Freeing of slaves a way to get to heaven. Women slaves worked in domestic roles, as entertainers, as concubines. Harem secured by eunuch guards: early islam forbade castration, so they got slaves from outside the region that were castrated. Eunuchs in many other areas of society as well, as they were said to be hard-workers.
