Mohammed was born in mecca to a trading family. Mecca was a diverse city housing pagans, jews, and christians. There were other mystical figures living in the city with whom people confused mohammed at times. His revelations were at first visions but later on became strictly auditory. There he formed the umma, a community of him and his followers which was entirely separate from anything that was already known. He came into conflict with the jews and christians in medina and eventually subjugated them. He was very successful militarily and took control over most of the middle east (including mecca). says that jesus is a prophet). It also asserts that mohammed is the last prophet. Mohammed was not divine and never claimed to be.
