Biggest modern changes: machines instead of human labor, different power sources, more raw materials. European culture led to superior economic growth and well-being. Europe began to take off using the wealth it took from the americas. World economy started in 1500, not recently. Asian economic miracle shows asia"s return to the central place in world economy. Europe was not in the world economy before 1800. World economy centered in asia: bin wong"s comparativist approach. Chinese and european social structure very different. Europe had to develop a credit system, but china did not due to its confucian values.
