Irish immigrants: people began to protest the working conditions of children after employers began to discipline them instead of their parents. Factory act of 1833: inspectors to enforce previous acts: children 9-13 only work 8 hours/day, 2 hours of school, 14-18 12 hours/day, could not work under the age of 9. The sexual division of labor: 1850 man emerging as primary breadwinner, and married woman found limited job opportunities, wives expected to concentrate on the home. Ideal of middle-class women who embraced the separate spheres.
