Document Summary

Radioactivity: the explosion of the nucleus of the atom, releasing enormous amount of energy. Isotopes: atoms of an element with different numbers of neutrons. Atomic number: number of protons in the nucleus. Deuterium: hydrogen that contains an extra neutron. Only kind of hydrogen that is radioactive. 99% of uranium found is u-238, about 0. 7% of uranium is u-235, which plays a key role in atomic bomb and nuclear reactors. Tnt works as large molecules breaks up into smaller molecules. Most common type of radioactivity, in which a relatively small particle is thrown out from a big nucleus. Alpha rays (stopped by a piece of paper, from uranium) Radiation: consists of the pieces that get thrown out in the explosion. Alpha and beta rays bounce off many atoms before they stop, each bounce knock apart a molecule or mutate a gene. Gamma rays tends to be absorbed by a single atom.
