The first priority of the coalition government has been to cut the deficit in the belief that it will stimulate private sector investment and consumption and lead to economic growth regaining its precrisis level. In pursuit of this objective , it has cut public expenditure on a range of public services. The government now blames the world recession as the cause of its difficulties, while the labour party, now in opposition blame the coalition government. After ww2 , the british empire was transformed into the commonwealth, a free association of 53 sovereign states with members on every continents. The commonwealth has no military or economic power ands its diplomatic influence is slight. Every british prime minister claims a special relationship with the us. The 1940-1945 wartime coalition government led by winston churchill laid the foundation for the introduction of a welfare state.
