PSYC 102 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Retina, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, Biological Neural Network
Document Summary
Experiment- subjects attribute humanlike characteristics to 3 shape characters that chase each other in video as a way of explaining actions they see. Patient had trouble pouring liquids because she couldn"t tell when to stop by perceiving rising motion of liquid; also hard to follow dialogue because she couldn"t see motion of speaker"s mouth/face and couldn"t see people/things approach her. Attentional capture- ability of motion to attract attention. Occurs when looking for something and when something catches your eye in peripheral vision. Survival importance- staying still in order to avoid detection when animals sense danger, attracts less attention and makes it harder for threat to differentiate between animal and environment. Illusion- bird drawing moving through chaotic pattern is hard to see when it stands still. Moving around object to get multiple viewpoints provides info about shape, etc. Illusory motion- perception of motion when there actually is none.
