Cesare beccaria and jeremy bentham influenced by enlightenment notions of the social contract hypothetical contract between indi and society. Law: based on a consensus among general population. We all give up some freedom in order to have order and safety. Classical perspective: indi are responsible for decision they make. All indi are all capable of calculating the costs and benefits of their actions that each should be treated equally in law that is not possible. Neo-classicalist = contemporary classical theories: there are limits to the freedom of indi to act fully or perfectly rational. Target hardening: crime reducing policies are based on analyzing and manipulating costs, risks, opportunities, incentives and provocations to crime. Rational choice & routine activity theorists: focus on how to prevent crimes versus how to punish (classical) Classic theory not theories but simply philosophies about crime and punishment.
