EDUC310 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Structural Analysis
Document Summary
Structural analysis = focus of word recognition instruction for upper elementary readers. Units of pronunciation that are easily isolated because they contain a vowel sound. Knowing the patterns used in most syllables is the key to multisyllabic decoding (when meaningful morphemes cannot be recognized) Recognize units and use them to attack new words. To engage in fluent reading and encounter new words constantly to build vocabulary. Link between components of word recognition and the rest of students" reading diet (fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension) Use texts to teach pronunciation, spelling, and meaning of words directly. Texts for students to recognize longer words in context. Structural analysis - syllable types (prefixes, suffixes), morphemes, spelling. Guided practice (think aloud while they spell) Discuss division of syllables and syllable types. For students who do not meet oral reading fluency benchmarks or struggle with multisyllabic decoding. More practice with words with similar structures.
