Document Summary
Language- a system of communication using sounds and symbols according to grammatical rules. Morphemes- the smallest language units that have meaning, including suffixes and prefixes. Phonemes- the basic sound of speech, the building blocks of language. Aphasia- a language disorder that results in deficits in language comprehension and production. Broca"s area- area of the brain that produces speech, located in the left hemisphere of the brain. Wer(cid:374)ike"s area- an area in the left hemisphere where the temporal and parietal lobes meet, involved in speech comprehension. Linguistic relativity theory- the claim that language determines thought. Phonemes- any of the perceptually distinct units of sound in a specified language that distinguish one word from another. Ex: the difference between r and l in river and liver. After several months of exposure to their own language, infants lose the ability to distinguish between sounds that do not matter in their own language. Infants start babbling in syllables at 7-8 months.
