Ability to use 2 diff sentences to say the same thing: sensorimotor- symbol use is concrete, works w/ objects, pre-operational- separates themselves from their environment. Begin to know the difference b/w symbol and oject, but cant generalize: formal operations- person starts manipulation purely abstract symbols like higher math and philosophy. Signs represent objects, events, and conditions other than themselves. Signs have 2 functions: indicate presence of some object other than itself/ arouses the conception of an object, event or condition with symbols. Signs are used to elicit and formulate behavior. The study of signs can be approached by semantics, pragmatics, syntactics. Speakers of language must acquire an intuitive knowledge of grammar. 2 psychological approaches to language are behavioristic approach and generative. Major syntactic concern of generative grammer is the difference b/w deep structure and surface structure. Performance is what actually produces a person according to chomsky. Views about language acquisition: behaviorist (language is learned) and nativist (language is innate)
