Kids needed discipline, economic support, attention, affection, and loving care: number of kids per family went down greater emotional investment. From cooperation to separation: women"s and men"s spheres: farming to wage labor, economic independence facilitated growth of individualism, heart of change = mens work out of home. African american, mexican american, and asian immigrant families. Mexican american families: elite landowning families, arranged their kids marriages, elaborate weddings and feasts, laborers, worked on great estates and had small holdings, tended to be mestizos, people whose ancestors were both spanish settlers and native.
