Words can mean different things to different people. Denotation- objective meaning of a term; what you would find in the dictionary. Connotation- subjective or emotional meaning that specific people give to a word. Abstraction-general concept used to describe different subcategories. Attitudes towards culture varies with each culture. Bias- we assume that the person is telling the truth. Direct messages are often perceived as less polite vs. indirect. Make me food vs. can you make me food . Be familiar with site/ rules for communicating before contributing. Anonymous messages- signed , the speaker of a message is clearly identified. Assertiveness- refers to a willingness to stand up for your rights. Can be seen as rude in some cultures. State how the problem affects you, tell the person how you feel. Propose solutions that are workable and that allows the other to save face. Extent in which you acknowledge another person.
