Document Summary

Lecture 2: describe the different ways biologists investigate how nature works, scientists, specifically biologists, seek to explain the natural world through experimentation and observation. This is the process through which scientific explanations are tested using evidence from the natural world. A scientific claim as the result of a pursued explanation is subject to peer review and replication. An observational study is facilitated through the observation of a subject, or an environment in correlation to the specific set of parameters which correlate to the explanation you plan to test. An example of this would be setting traps in three different types of habitats and observing the quantities of field mice caught in each location to determine where the population is most densely settled. An experimental study, on the other hand, occurs in a manipulated and controlled environment. This is to prevent any extraneous variables from diluting or influencing the results of an experiment.
