Beginning of 20th century, large exhibitions took place in europe showcasing art from 29 different countries. Ideas of art were catered around european civilization. Tate gallery opened in london largest exhibition space in the world. Contemporary art is made up of youthfulness, openness, plurality and multiculturalism. Art went from traditional paintings to installations, performances, 3d pieces, etc. Art started to be made out of random materials. Duchamp, for example, used coal sacks, miles of string. Art represented more than what was shown on the surface . Ex: grass doesn"t have to be green, sky doesn"t have to be blue. Combines literature, film, music, design, architecture and advertising. Art in a certain time period has to do with what is occurring in that time period. Modernity the experience of living in the new modern world. What it felt like to live in the new environment and conditions that the 20th century offered. Different works made the modern period turn modern.
