Document Summary

Emaciation, distorted view of body, intense fear of gaining weight. Cessation of menstruation, obsessive preoccupation with food, occasional purging, and a successful struggle for control over persistent hunger. Mood disturbances, sexual problems, lack of impulse control, medical issues. Fear not soothed by weight loss, may actually grow more intense. Do not recognize emaciation for what it is. Distorted body image: inaccurate perception of body size and shape. Typically a reaction to the loss of body fat associated with physiological changes, not a symptom that precedes anorexia. Constipation, abdominal pain, intolerance to cold, and lethargy. Skin can become dry and cracked, development of lanugo (fine, downy hair on face or trunk of body) Electrolyte imbalance: disturbance in the levels of potassium, sodium, calcium, and other vital elements. Lead to cardiac arrest or kidney failure. Associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder. May be a reaction to starvation, not a risk factor for anorexia.
