Anxiety: mood state characterized by marked negative affect and bodily symptoms of tension in which a person apprehensively anticipates future danger or misfortune. Anxiety may involve feelings, behaviors, and physiological responses. Hard to study in humans so most research is done on rats. Future-oriented mood state, characterized by apprehension because we cannot predict or control upcoming events. Fear: emotion of an immediate alarm reaction to present danger or life- threatening emergencies. Immediate emotional reaction to current danger characterized by strong escapist action tendencies and, often a surge in the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system. Panic attack: abrupt experience of intense fear or discomfort accompanied by several physical symptoms, such as dizziness or heart palpitations. Expected (cued) panic attack- having an attack due to a situation. Unexpected (uncued) panic attacks- do not have a clue when or where the next attack will occur. Inherit a tendency to be tense, uptight, and anxious.
