Whites can claim any of the various white identities that they choose. Americans still hold on to some ethnic background because of the assimilation of immigrants into american culture, they do not have to. These people only have the culture they choose to keep influence on their lives when they want it to. For people who are not just white, they cannot just drop their ethnicity, and although individuals are supposed to be equal, we see that ethnic groups really are not equal. The disparity is very apparent on college campuses as it is not immediately noticed when like-minded people hang out together but it is immediately noticed when people of the same ethnicity are together. Ethnicity because a symbol, hence the term symbolic ethnicity. People refer to chinese as the model minority for working their way up and gaining a reputation as successful.
