Chapter 1: rhythm meter and tempo: rhythm- the actual arrangement of durations, particularly long and short notes, musical time is measured in beats: this determines the pulse. When certain beats appear louder, they are accented: meter- any recurring pattern of strong and weak beats, such as the one two and one two three. In duple meter, beats are grouped in twos. In triple meter, beats are grouped in threes: simple meter- when the main beats are divided in twos. Ie 2/4, 3/4, 4/4: compound meter- dividing the main beats in threes. This style also creates a more mellow theme. Mozart symphony 40: piece drives towards something, created by the addition of more complex rhythms and increase in dynamics, dramatizes the piece. Modulates between major and minor in an instant. Anton vaburn one of five pieces for orchestra: The trumpet"s mute adds color and makes it feel like something is being held back.
