MUSIC 101 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Marimba, Unpitched Percussion Instrument, Tambourine
Document Summary
The range of sound that humans can hear extends from around 20 to 20,000 cycles per second. Noises with unfocused vibrations do not have pitch. Amplitude- the level of strength of sound vibrations. Dynamics- the level of sound: forte- loud, piano- soft. Tone color/timbre- the qualitative difference between how two instruments sound: to create timbre, the strings on a piano or stringed instrument can vibrate in halves or even eighths. *the amount and exact mixture of overtones are what gives an instrument its timbre* Instrument timbres: strings sound produced from vibration created between string and sound box. Different sized instruments= different tones: woodwinds vibrations of air in different columns. Different shapes and different ways air is moved= different pitches: brass player"s lips vibrate against the cup of the mouthpiece. Different mouthpieces/tubing size= different register of tone: percussion produces sound by being struck or shaken. Unpitched percussion instruments are without a fixed pitched (ie tambourine)
