MUSIC 101 Chapter 8: The Early Boroque Period
Document Summary
Recitative singing- a new style of solo singing that aimed to join together features of music and speech: this led to the opera, which was invented in. Rhythms became more definite and regular: a single rhythm or similar rhythms can be heard throughout a piece or major segment. New emphasis on meter: bar lines are used for the first time, the meter is systematically in evidence. The basso continuo then evolves to the continuo: originally this was the bass line of the polyphony reinforced by chords, then, the continuo with its chords was mapped out first with polyphony above adjusting to it. Ground bass- music constructed from the bottom up: bass plays a single short melody many times, while upper instruments play different melodies you don"t modulate. Bass ostinato- persistent" or obstinate" bass; another name for ground bass (continuous). Concitato- instruments and voices are together very expressive. Monody- a fairly complicated melody with a bass line building chords below them.
