Some composers pushed forward with ever bolder expression and technique (wagner), while other composers searched for new vitality in modes of expression that by now seemed traditional (brahms). Modernism- a special self-consciousness, on the part of the artists themselves, of their position at the forefront of new development. Avant-garde- vanguard originally a military term, although it has long been embraced by radical artists and thinkers to denote the forefront of their activity. The full variety of modernist music includes not only radical experimentation but also more modest kinds: embraces late nationalist composers, includes many composers who incorporated into their works the newly prominent avant-garde. Through the twentieth century, these many styles mixed, merged, and interacted with one another to form the colorful tapestry of modernist classical music. What had been essentially rural societies, controlled by stable aristocracies turned into modern nations dominated by urban centers and run by self-made entrepreneurs.
