Document Summary

Compounds are substances made of 2 or more elements in a fixed ratio. Atoms are the smallest units of elements. Protons and neutrons cluster in the nucleus of an atom. Atomic number = # protons in nucleus. Mass number = # protons + neutrons in nucleus. ~1/2000 dalton isotopes their mass number differs, but not their atomic number (they have different numbers of neutrons): for example, 12c, 13c and 14c are three isotopes of carbon. Isotopes can be useful as tracers in biochemistry and physiology. In atoms, the # of protons always equals the # of electrons. Electrons occur in electron shells: correspond to the energy level of the electrons that occupy them, fill from the inside out. Inner shells must be full before any electrions can occupy a shell that is further out: have maximum capacities. For biology the first 3 shells are important.
