Document Summary

Includes the formation of a compound from its elements, the reverse of that, all combustion processes, the generation of electricity, production of cellular energy . Key event of redox reactions = net movement of electrons from one reactant to another. Movement occurs from the reaction with less attraction for electrons to the reactant with more attraction for electrons. Occurs in formation of ionic and covalent compounds. Oxidizing agent is the species doing the oxidizing (causing the electron loss) Reducing agent is the species doing the reducing (causing the electron gain) Oxidation numbers = bookkeeping system to monitor which atom loses electron charge and which gains it. Each atom in a molecule is assigned an on or oxidation state which is the charge the atom would have if electrons were transferred completely, not shared. Each element in a binary ionic compound has a full charge because the atom transferred its electrons. So atoms on = the ionic charge.
