Document Summary

Alkanes are aliphatic hydrocarbons having only c-c and c-h sigma bonds. Acyclic alkanes have the formula cnh2n+2, and contain only linear and branched chains of c atoms (saturated hydrocarbons) Cycloalkanes contain c joined in 1 or more rings; cnh2n. All c atoms in an alkane are surrounded by 4 groups so sp3 hybridized and tetrahedral with 109. 5 bond angles. Lewis structures do not imply 3d arrangement. The bends in a c chain don"t matter when it comes to identifying different compounds. Constitutional isomers differ in the way the atoms are connected to each other. C atoms in alkanes and other organic compounds are classified by the number of other. Hydrogen atoms are primary, secondary or tertiary depending on the type of c they are bonded to. A ch2 group is called a methylene group. A group of compounds that differ only by a ch2 group is called a homologous series.
