Document Summary
Was a follower of wundt but he changed the wundt system of psychology when he brought it to the us from germany. Structuralism can be applied only to titchener"s approach to psychology; it lasted 2 decades in the us. Wundt"s view was that the organization of the elements of consciousness was how higher level thinking came to be. The mind had the power to organize mental element s voluntarily. Titchener focused instead on mental elements and their mechanical linking through association and discarded wundt"s apperception. Titchener"s view was that psychology"s fundamental task was to discover the nature of elementary conscious experiences; analyze consciousness into its parts and determine its structure. He spent most of his life at cornell where he established a lab, wrote articles and conducted research. He eventually was the the one conducting the research; he carefully overlooked his students. He was an outstanding teacher and his lectures were well attended.
