Chapter 10: elections: methods of nominating candidates, u. s. has three methods of nominating candidates: legislative caucus, convention, and direct primary, legislative caucus. Parties held meetings called caucuses of their most active supporters to nominate candidates. Back in the day, selecting candidates was a challenge; transportation and communication were primitive, and it was no easy task to assemble party activists from all over a state. The initial solution was to give the legislative caucus responsibility for choosing nominees for state and national offices. Delegates were sometimes chosen by local party members, but mainly been selected by party members in smaller political units. Today, all 50 states use the direct primary for some, if not all, nominations. Laws vary from state to state, for example, some hold closed primaries: this means only registered party members may vote in a party"s, independents may vote in the general election but they cannot primary participate in party primaries.
