Document Summary

Nervous system can communicate because of: neurons and glial cells: electric signals generated by neurons are called action potentials, glial cells don"t have action potential but they support neurons. Neurons structure and function: 4 regions: cell body-contains nucleus and organelles. They bring info from other neurons or sensory cells to the cell body. Neurons with lots can collect from lots of sources, whereas neurons with few are limited and specific axon-one dendrite projection that is the long and the main one. They carry info in the action potentials across them (from the presynaptic cell to the target postsynaptic cell axon terminal-nerve endings at the end of the axon: their plasma membranes generate and conduct the action potentials. The axon terminal comes very close to the membrane of the target cell, which forms the synapses. Electrical synapse are direct contact between two neurons, whereas chemical have 25 nm wide space it has to travel.
