Ethnic group- a social category of people who share a common culture. Ethnic identity- the group shares a common cultural bond. An ethnic group may become stronger when faced with prejudice or hostility. Race- a group treated as distinct in society based on certain characteristics that have been assigned social importance. A race is signaled out for how they have been treated and labeled historically. Social categories are not fixed and vary from society to society. Racialization- a process where some social category takes on what society perceives to be racial characteristics. Racial discrimination is an issue faced that has increased over the last decade. Race is created and maintained by powerful groups. Racial formation- the process by which a group comes to be defined as a race. Out-group homogeneity effect- all members of any out-group are perceived to be similar to each other and differences among them seem to be minor or nonexistent.
