The goal of this book, and this course, is not so much to introduce you to new worlds as it is to inspire you to take a long hard look at familiar ones. And, i promise you, the reward for doing that will be much greater than the simple gratification of intellectual curiosity. The practical value of taking a sociology course is that what you learn, by definition, never will be irrelevant to your life present and future.
