COM 221 Chapter 2: COM 221 CH 2
Document Summary
Culture: the relatively specialized lifestyle of a group of people that is passed on from one generation to the next through communication, not genes. What a group has produced and developed --shared beliefs, artifacts, language, values, art, laws, religion, and communication theories, styles, and attitudes. Culture is not synonymous with race or nationality. Two filipinos -- one is a surfer in ca and the other is a business man in ny -- will have different attitudes, beliefs, etc depending on their surrounding culture. Their culture is not the same just because they share the same nationality. Culture is an organism interacting with its surroundings. Cultural evolution: ( social darwinism ) some cultures are considered to be advanced while others are considered to be primitive. Most present scholars reject this view because the judgements and comparisons have no scientific backing and instead are based on individual values.
