Music business was suffering from racial inequality. White musicians always earning more than black musicians. Black musicians forced to play lesser gigs. Made some black musicians disengage from swing. 1940: black swing musicians find an alternative music scene in harlem. Allows them to play what they want to play. Musicians of the 1930s provide an influence to the new musical culture. Lester young bluesy and relaxed style.
