Document Summary

Allele: character or dose controlling a particular trait. Haploid: single set of unpaired chromosomes n . Gene: set of alt alleles that may occur at a given locus; made up of dna act as instruction to make molecules called proteins; basic and physical functional unit of heredity. Homozygotes: purebred diploid individuals with identical alleles so breeds true for the corresponding characteristic. Heterozygotes: individuals with 2 diff alleles such as the f2 plants; gives rise to varying offspring. Dominant: allele that masks expression of another allele (one that is masked is recessive) Segregate: unlike alleles separate from each other in form of gametes. Whenever 2 individuals that homogeneous for different alleles or heterozygous mater new combos of alleles arise in next gen by reassortment of genetic material. Observable traits in individuals are aspects of phenotype (set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype w the environment)
