Duality of aphrodite as goddess of love. Aphrodite urania came from uranus alone - is ethereal and sublime. Aphrodite pandemos came from zeus and dione - essentially physical in nature. Plato"s symposium says that urania is stronger, more intelligent and spiritual. Pandemos is born from both sexes and more about physical satisfaction. Urania being pure and spiritual love, pandemos being physical attraction and procreation. Goddess of love, beauty and marriage - worshipped everywhere but in different forms and ways. Depicted as clothed, but started being depicted nude - idealization of femininity. The graces and the hours or seasons are often associated with aphrodite as decorative and appropriate attendants. Priapus is aphrodite"s son, and a fertility god. Depicted with an large and erect phallus. Aphrodite was enraged with the women of cyprus because they didn"t worship her divinity, and cursed them to lose their shame - they became prostitutes.
