Document Summary
Chapter 12: evaluating & developing effective communication in relationships. Cms 315m supplemental instruction: the relativity of effective communication, things that make it difficult to evaluate if communication is effective (pg. 408-409: people can have multiple goals and sometimes we may not be aware of our goals. I want to get something off my chest & not achieve anything. Is this still effective: some people feel there is an ethical/moral dimension to effective communication. Does it still count: one"s own effectiveness is inextricably linked to the goal attainment of the other person. Both speaker & listener clearly communicate what they intend, but there is still trouble . If violated: speaker seen as paternalistic, ego-tripper, or irrelevant: i am committed to my message. (i mean what i say & i know what i"m talking about. ) If violated: speaker seen as phony, wishy-washy, or dumb: i hope that both of us will profit from this interaction.
