Meteorites: solid objects that while, orbiting the sun, have collided with earth. Provide a good first guest to predicting what comprised the earth and moon: stony and iron meteorites: With few exception, they are classified as stony or iron. Iron are distinctive and easily recognized, and extremely resistant to attack by weathering. Stony look more like ordinary rocks and they decompose more quickly, becoming part of the soil: a closer look. Meteorites are an intergrowth of two kinds of iron-nickle alloy. One alloy consists of iron with less than 8 percent nickel, whereas the other contains more than 20 percent nickel. Upon impact, the energy of meteorite motion is abruptly transformed into heat energy sufficient to vaporize even an object made of iron. The largest object able to survive the collision would be. 3 meters or so in diameter, so its really more an explosion instead of a strike.
