Chapter 8: Energy Balance and Body Composition Obesity – body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher Body mass index (BMI) – a measure of an adult’s weight in relation to his or her height    1 inch = 0.0254 meters  Useful weight screening tool for most people o Underweight BMI < 18.5 o Healthy weight BMI 18.5-24.9 o Overweight BMI 25-29.9 o Obese BMI ≥ 30 What is a healthy weight?  BMI (body mass index)  Waist circumference o Quick indicator abdominal fat and health risk o Large waist size is associated with increased health risk even if BMI is normal  Greater than 35” in women  Greater than 40” in men  Waist-to-hip ratio  Body composition (% body fat) o Ratio of fat tissue to lean body mass (muscle, bone and organs0 o Usually expressed as percent body fat o Important for measuring health risks associated with too much body fat Body fat distribution affects health:  Storing excess fat around the waist vs. the hips and thighs increases risk of: o Heart disease o Diabetes o Hypertension (apple vs. pear)  Central obesity (android obesity) – storing too much visceral fat in the abdomen o Visceral fat releases fatty acids  Which travel to the liver causing:  Insulin resistance  Increased LDL  Decreased HDL
