PSY 418 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Squared Deviations From The Mean, Standard Deviation, Statistical Inference
Document Summary
Measure of central tendency: purpose is to get an idea of the center of a distribution and what the means, mean is the average. It is possible to have just one mode (unimodal) or two modes (bimodal) Ignore positive and negative signs; treat all as if they were positive: mean deviation/avg. Sometimes called a construct, and are defined at a theoretical level: difficult to see, operational definitions turn a concept of interest into a measured or manipulated variable, most often variables are at a conceptual level. Three claims: claim = argument someone is trying to make, can be based on experience/observation, rhetoric, textual evidence, or based on empirical research, frequency claim, describes a particular rate/degree of a single variable, ex. 1 in 25 teenagers attempt suicide or 44% of adults are not always happy. There are 3 basic types, positive, negative, and zero: positive association, high goes with high, low goes with low; positive correlation, ex.
